New Sod Watering & Care in Central Florida
New sod gives you immediate ground cover, but it is not an established lawn yet. Plan who will check it, how it will receive water, and when you will review its progress before installation day.
This guide explains what to discuss at handoff. Follow the care instructions for the installed grass and your property, and confirm current local watering rules. A fixed number of minutes is not suitable for every sprinkler system, soil or weather pattern.
Before delivery: make sure the watering plan is workable
If irrigation cannot be arranged or restrictions affect establishment, discuss timing before material is delivered. For Apopka utility customers, check the city’s new-sod reporting information as well as current restrictions.
- Confirm the irrigation source and rules that apply to your address
- Identify broken heads or areas the system does not reach
- Agree who will check the sod during the establishment period
- Arrange access to the controller and understand its settings
- Ask for the selected grass variety and care instructions at handoff
Water for establishment, then adjust as roots develop
UF/IFAS explains that newly laid sod needs moisture while roots develop, with watering frequency reduced as establishment progresses. Fit the plan to rainfall, the irrigation system and actual conditions; keeping the area saturated is not the same as helping it root.
Check for uneven coverage rather than simply extending every sprinkler zone. Ask the installation team how to assess the sod and underlying soil without disturbing the new lawn. If one part stays dry while another stays wet, flag that difference early.
Let rooting guide mowing and foot traffic
Keep routine play, pet traffic and heavy equipment off the new lawn while it establishes. A green surface alone does not show that the roots are ready for normal use.
UF/IFAS advises waiting to mow newly planted St. Augustine until the roots have anchored into the soil, often around 14–21 days. Treat that as general guidance, not a guaranteed mowing date for every lawn or grass type. Confirm rooting and the correct mowing height for the installed cultivar.
For newly planted St. Augustine, UF/IFAS also advises delaying fertilizer for 30–60 days. Ask about the appropriate plan for your grass and follow applicable local fertilizer restrictions; adding fertilizer immediately is not a substitute for sound establishment care.
Raise concerns early instead of changing everything at once
Contact the installation team if you notice persistent dry edges, areas that remain soggy, sod that shifts, or worsening discoloration. Describe where the issue occurs, when it started and what the watering routine has been. These observations help the team decide what needs checking; they are not a diagnosis on their own.
Avoid responding to an unexplained problem by adding fertilizer, pesticide or large amounts of water without guidance. Keep a simple record of rainfall and watering changes so the next conversation has useful context.
